Captured ship: Philanthropist of Alexandria (master Forrest Richardson).
History: an American merchant ship (brig, 134 tons), bound from Alexandria, Virginia for La Guaira laden with dry goods, glassware, watches, butter, flour, candles, carpenters tools, muslins, silks etc; taken on 30 May 1799 by the French privateer L'Hypolite (Douillard commanding) and sent in for Vigo, retaken on 3 July 1799 by HMS Cerberus (James Macnamara commanding, and brought into Plymouth.
Decision: salvage.

- Details of this American ship taken by the French and retaken by the British have been added from Greg H Williams, The French Assault on American Shipping, 1793-1812: A History and Comprehensive Record of Merchant Marine Losses (2009. Based on later compensation records, this book often contains information about the captured crew who had been removed from the prize by the French.
