Captured ship: Philanthropist of Alexandria (master Forrest Richardson).
History: an American merchant ship (brig, 134 tons), bound from Alexandria, Virginia for La Guaira laden with dry goods, glassware, watches, butter, flour, candles, carpenters tools, muslins, silks etc; taken on 30 May 1799 by the French privateer L'Hypolite (Douillard commanding) and sent in for Vigo, retaken on 3 July 1799 by HMS Cerberus (James Macnamara commanding, and brought into Plymouth.
Decision: salvage.
