J391.

Captured ship: Industry schuyt of Altona (master Flores Westerduyn).

History: a Danish ship, bound from Rotterdam to London, laden with 3,400 Dutch cheeses, and with a cloth bag sent on board (just before sailing on 11 May) by Huding and Co brokers of Rotterdam containing four parcels of letters and newspapers to be delivered to Mr De Bee the broker in London etc (but to be thrown overboard if attacked by the French); seized on 15 May 1799 off Orford Ness by the Excise cutter Lively (Matthew Gunthorpe commanding), and brought into Harwich.

Documents:-

Court papers, numbered [CP 1] -[CP 8]: depositions, costs of depositions etc at Harwich, affidavit of the perishable nature of the cargo, appraisement and sale, translations of the ship's papers, monition, claim of the privateer Argus (John Saunders commanding) to have been in sight at the time of seizure [probably enclosed in wrapper 5].

Mail in transit (letters and papers), now numbered 1- 159 as follows:-

  • Letters 1-31 addressed to Van Dyck Gevers and Co, London or via that address for forwarding [probably enclosed in wrapper no 4].
  • Letters 32-60 addressed to or via Mr Samuel Jolly, London, and others, with many enclosures of printed papers (Koophandel en Zeevart Tydingen, Nouvelles Politiques etc) and annotated Prices Current.
  • Letters 61-74 addressed to or via London, including a small printed book Naamregister van alle de Kooplieden ... der stadt Amsterdam ... Als Mede der Joodsche Kooplieden, 1799 [list of merchants and Jewish merchants of Amsterdam].
  • Letters 75-105 including several to Dutch prisoners of war on the prison ship Sandwich at Chatham, and at Norman Cross, Great Yarmouth etc [probably enclosed in wrapper no 3].
  • Printed papers 106-151 : 106-129Goudasche Courant, issues 32-56, 15 March -10 May 1799; 130-151 Rotterdamsche Courant, issues 34-56 [35 not included], 19 March-9 May 1799 [probably enclosed in wrapper 1].
  • Letters 152 -154, printed papers 155- 159 Rotterdamsche Courant, issues 52-56, 30 April -9 May 1799, all enclosed in wrapper 2.

  • Wrapper 1: Aan De Burgers H & I Honkoop Boekhandelaar Leyden.
  • Wrapper 2: Messers Portman, Hullman and Company, Great St Thomas Apostle Street.
  • Wrapper 3: Brieven.

  • Wrapper 5: Jos [Joseph] Culpack commissioner; Mr Runnacles commissioner; John Hull notary public
  • Wrapper 6: a wrapper for the whole set of Industry's papers and the parcels of letters and papers, addressed to the court and marked with the court number 391.
