Description

J356.

Captured ship: Johanna og Maria (master Hans Kroyer, Kroÿer or Kroger).

History: a Danish ship, belonging to C E Blacks Widow and Co, and Frederick Fredericks, of Copenhagen, sailing from Calcutta by way of Mauritius to Copenhagen: taken off Dungeness by HMS Savage (commanded by Norborne Thompson) on 20 May 1799, and brought into the Downs.

Documents: Interrogatories, affidavits, claims, and some translations of ship's papers.

An affidavit by Hans Kroger of 2 July 1799 that in addition to the tin box of ship's papers originally handed over by him on 20 May, and now in the court Registry numbered 1-36, there were other books and papers now delivered and numbered 37-1324. These were not concealed, but were not delivered at the time of capture or examination, as Kroyer did not consider them to be ship's papers.

Several bundles of ship's papers, and private and business letters belonging to Kroyer, labelled 'Nos 59-118'; 'Nos 180-343'; 'Nos 799-900'; 'Nos 901-1000'; 'Nos 1101-1200'; 'Nos 1201-1310'; 'and a small bundle containing 'Nos 216, 220, 288, 242, 292, 1228': dated between c 1794 and 1799.

The examinations are annotated: 'There are also belonging to this Case separate from these papers, three large parcels [of] books and papers'.
