Registry Number: ACA 145/34. <p>Report, undated, states that a castle situated near Taufers in South Tyrol contains 300 paintings from the Uffizzi in Florence; Castle St Leonhard in Passaier Valley, North Meran, contains a further 300 paintings and sculptures; the royal castle of Duke Pistoia in Bolzano contains in its cellars the Italian King's collection of coins and a quantity of gold and silver bars, and at Castle St Wolfgang there is a collection of pictures, property of Wolfgang himself. <p>Letter from the Allied Commission for Austria [British Element] to G-5, AFHQ [American Forces HQ] regarding works of art and archives in the Salzburg area, dated 2 April 1945. Refers to the Ghent Altarpiece, 'The Blood of the Lamb', by Van Eyck. Further states that 'these repositories contain other looted works of art, namely from Italy and France, besides portions of the famous collections of the Albertina and Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Further, there are parts of the Reich Foreign Office archives, the importance of which need no stressing'. <p>List of repositories to which works of art and archives have been moved in Austria, dated 5 May 1945. Refers to Eyck's altar-piece from Ghent, the Hertziana Library, the Prussian State Library, part of the Liechtenstein Collections, objects from the Albertina and Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, large quantitites of works of art looted from the Rosenberg collection in France, and a large series of paintings of Decius Mus by Rubens and other important pictures from the Liechtenstein collection and Berlin libraries, evacuated to Schloss Hohennerfen. <p>Letter from the Allied Commission for Austria to the Secretariat about 'deposits of works of art in Western Austria', dated April 1945. <p>Further includes the 'Third Edition of Repositories or Works of Art and Archives in Germany', from the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, G-5, Internal Affairs Branch, dated April 1945. Includes a list of deposits with sites, map references and remarks [47 page document]. Refers to the abovementioned cultural property. <p>Document by the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Division entitled 'Deposits of works of art, archives etc. in Germany' reporting on the information available up to 8 February 1945, dated 9 February 1945. Encloses a list of deposits in N W Germany, Hesse-Nassau; Westfalen; Rheinprovinz, Bad Godesburg; Sigmaringen; Baden-Baden; Amstetten; Ehingen; Riedlingen; Heilbronn a Neckar; Aschhausen; Fuessen; Buxheim; Augsburg; Kogl; Thuringia and Rodolstadt. <p>List of places to which looted works of art are reported to have been taken, by place and map reference, dated November 1944. No reference to specific works of art. <p>Letter from the Control Commission for Germany [British Element] to the Austrian Control Commission, dated 29 November 1944, stating that 'it is reliably reported from Rome railway station that numerous crates of works of art were despatched from there addressed to Franz Hofer, Gauleiter of Tirol and Vorarlberg, Bad Aussee, Austria. These cases were marked 'by personal order of the Fuehrer, the Germany Embassy, Rome'. It is believed that many objects may also be in the neighbourhood of the railway station of Sitzenberg-Reitling in Lower Austria'.</p>
