Description

Folio Range: [seq 62-79; folios 22-29].

Case Reference: Richard Birkenhead, 2 December 1646.

Description: [seq 64; folio 22] Copy of petition of Richard Birkenhead of Canterbury, asking that his land in Lancashire be discharged from sequestration, it having been seized because his son, William Birkenhead, joint owner now deceased, was a student at Oxford.

[seq 66; folio 23] Certificate of the County Lieutenants of Kent, 13 August 1646, assuring the Lancashire committee that Richard Birkenhead, proctor of Canterbury, is not a delinquent and has not been sequestrated in Kent. Signed: Avery Sabyn (Mayor of Canterbury), Edward Master, William Man.

[seq 68-69; folio 24] Order of the Lancashire committee, 20 August 1646, that Richard Birkenhead should be allowed his half share in the land at Much Woolton, Lancashire, but that the half owned by his son (formerly a captain in the King's army, now dead) should continue to be held by the State pending a decision by the Sequestration Committee.

[seq 70; folio 25] Affidavit of Richard Birkenhead that he purchased Much Woolton with his own money, and that he put the deed in joint names with his son, then a schoolboy of 13, without his son's knowledge, solely in order to avoid title passing in dower to his then wife.

[seq 72; folio 26] Baptismal certificate for William Birkenhead, born 11 November 1621.

[seq 74; folio 27] Certificate, 24 August 1646, of William Plombe, agent for sequestration within the parish of Childwall in Lancashire, stating the rents received on Richard Birkenhead's lands at Much Woolton and elsewhere.

[seq 76; folio 28] Order, 4 December 1646, to refer the case to John Bradshaw.

[seq 78-79; folio 29] Bradshaw's report, 16 March 1647.
