Case Reference: James Brooke, 22 September 1645.
Description: [seq 233; folio 97] Petition of James Brooke of York, for a hearing, as he has been asked by the committee of York to contribute to public service for a twentieth of his estate, which he claims has been taken by force and given by the Marquis of Newcastle, who had imprisoned him, to General King. Having been found in the Marquis' quarters, he was then considered delinquent by the committee in Hull, and his estates, as well as £400 worth of goods were sequestrated.

[seq 237-238; folio 100] Report of the committee of York, received by Sir William Allenson, 14 August 1645, on the testimony of?Henry Cooper of East Smithfield and Edmund Herryson, sailor of Scarborough, against James Brooke, alderman, merchant, reporting that in 1643, Brooke provided weaponry to the king's army and traded in Scarborough and Hartlepool. Estates estimated at £20000. Annotated: '1 November 1648 discharged'.
[seq 239; folio 101] Petition [March 1647?] of James Brooke that a date be set for a final hearing of his case, as he denies having brought goods to Hartlepool and that his trading was in any way a proof of delinquency; and he repeats that he was always loyal to Parliament, to his great peril and disadvantage.
