Administrative / biographical background

The statue, by Grinling Gibbons, was originally erected in the Privy Gardens, Whitehall, in 1686. In 1897 it was moved to Gwydyr House, Whitehall and thence to St James Park in 1903. It was moved to its present situation in front of the National Gallery in 1948.
