In November 2009, The Marine and Coastal Access Act received Royal Assent, containing legislation pertaining to the creation of an ecologically coherent network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). 'Net Gain' is one of four regional Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) projects in England that will work with sea users and interest groups to identify Marine Conservation Zones. 'Net Gain' was established to work with stakeholders to identify and recommend Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) in the English North Sea only.
