The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) was established under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 and merged the functions previously carried out by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). The primary role of the DBS is to help employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups including children.
