Edmund Halley was educated at Queen's College, Oxford. By the time he was 19 he had produced a significant analytical paper on planetary orbits. Halley soon recognised the importance of an accurate catalogue of the stars of the southern hemisphere. In 1676 he went on a mission to St Helena under the auspices of the Royal Society to make the necessary accurate observations. The publication in 1678 of his 'Catalogue of the Southern Stars' made his reputation. In 1720, he succeeded Flamsteed as Astronomer Royal.
