Description
Letter from Major E R Radcliffe at the War Office to Mr Mackenzie at the Foreign Office, enclosing a copy of correspondence from Rear Admiral Taylor MP on the 'alleged non-return of agricultural implements to the Dutch from Germans who had previously looted them', dated 25 August 1945. Several letters had been received on the same subject and it was not clear whether the matter should be dealt with by the Foreign Office or the War Office. A copy of the correspondence had also been sent to the Military Mission in Holland asking them to take it up with the 21 Army Group. Includes a reply from Mr Mackenzie to Mr Radcliffe, dated 31 August 1945, stating that 'There has, I fear, been much delay in restoring to its rightful owners Dutch property looted by the Germans and we are fully aware of the natural resentment on the part of the Dutch people that this delay has aroused'. The letter further explains that 'we have arranged with the War Office...to instruct Field Marshal Montgomery to institute certain interim restitution measures in his own Zone.' Further includes an acknowledgement of receipt of this letter from Mr Radcliffe, dated 4 September 1945.
