The index to the census returns for 1871 contain all the place names appearing in the population tables of the Registrar General's census reports together with the names of the county and registration district, and the reference numbers to the registration district and sub-district in which the place is situated. Wherever a civil parish extends to more than one census volume, the circumstance is indicated by the addition of '(part)' to the name of that parish, and wherever a civil parish extends to more than one registration district this is explained in a footnote.

Institutions and merchant vessels which were selected for special tabulation in the Registrar General's census reports, are arranged within registration districts, sub-districts and civil parishes are identified by the following numerals after the place name:

  • (1) Barracks and military quarters;
  • (2) HM ships at home;
  • (3) Workhouses (including pauper schools);
  • (4) Hospitals (sick, convalescent, incurable);
  • (5) Lunatic asylums (public and private);
  • (6) Prisons;
  • (7) Certified reformatories and industrial schools;
  • (8) Merchant vessels;
  • (9) Schools. street indexes are available for all metropolitan districts, and districts with populations exceeding 40,000.
