The British Library Board was established on 1 April 1973 under the terms of the British Library Act 1972, to manage the Library as a national centre for reference, study and bibliographical and other information. The Board held its first meeting on 27 April 1973.
The Board consists of a chairman appointed by the Secretary of State and not less than eight, nor more than thirteen, other members of whom one is appointed by Her Majesty and the remainder are appointed by the Secretary of State. At least one member of the Board is appointed as a full-time member. The first chairman of the British Library Board - Viscount Eccles - was appointed in December 1973 and held office for five years. He was succeeded by Lord Dainton (1978-1985), Lord Quinton (1985-1990), Michael Saunders Watson (1990-1993)
