Hearth Tax exemption certificates and related documents for Sussex. 121 items comprising 97 documents. These documents are mainly Hearth Tax exemption certificates, but also include a parchment cover, certificates recording non-payment, certificates concerning numbers of hearths payable, a certificate alleging negligence, and notes of decrease of hearths. Described and dated at item level. The certificates were originally in two bundles, each having string passing through the top of the documents. Some documents had come loose. 'Bundle 1' contained documents relating to the Hearth Tax collection of Lady Day 1663, and its cover was the present item 31. 'Bundle 2' contained documents relating to the Hearth Tax collection of Michaelmas 1663, and its cover was the present item 1. The descriptions show where each item was found in the original arrangement.
