Very few private office records have been preserved, and those which have survived relate principally to the period 1968-1973 when the organisation suffered heavy losses through its failed investment strategy. Earlier private office papers have not survived because they were considered to fall outside of the Public Records Acts, an opinion which has been revised following further legal opinion of May 1997 on the status of the records of the Crown Agents.
