Minutes of the Glamorganshire Canal Navigation Company.
The Glamorganshire Canal Navigation Company was incorporated by the Merthyr Tydvill to Cardiff Canal Act 1790 (30 Geo III, cap.82) which authorised the construction of a canal from Merthyr Tydfil to "The Bank", a location on the River Taff near Cardiff.
The canal was opened in February 1794 and was 24.5 miles long, had 49 locks and could take barges 60ft long by 9ft wide.
The extension of the canal was authorised by the Glamorganshire Canal Act 1796 (36 Geo III, cap.69) and other acts were passed for improvements.
In 1885, the Marquess of Bute purchased the canal.
Parts of the canal began to fall out of use from 1865 and by 1942 the entire canal was disused.
In 1943, the Cardiff Corporation bought the company and obtained an act in the same year, containing powers to abandon it, though this was not to take effect until 6 months after the end of the Second World War.
