Incorporated by act of 14th May 1766 (6 Geo III, cap.96) as "Company of Proprietors of Navigation from Trent to Mersey". It was commonly called "Grand Trunk".

By "North Staffordshire Railway (Pottery Line) Act" 26th June 1846, company was incorporated as "North Staffordshire Railway Company" and "Company of Proprietors of Navigation from Trent to Mersey" was from and after 15th January 1847 vested in said Railway Company (see Section 53).
