Incorporated under act of 28th March 1793 (33 Geo III, cap.112) as "Company of Proprietors of Stratford-upon-Avon Canal Navigation".
By Sections 21 & 22 of act of 27th July 1846, Oxford Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway Company were authorised to purchase Canal Company subject to certain provisions therein contained. Committee Minute dated 4th May 1857 (at page 339 of Rail 875/4) recite that Deeds of Conveyance of Canal to Railway Company ready for execution and that 7th May 1857 was fixed for completion of purchase.
This Railway Company was, by virtue of West Midland Act 14th June 1860, amalgamated with Newport Abergavenny and Hereford, and Worcester and Hereford Railways to form West Midland Railway Company. Latter Company was amalgamated with Great Western Railway Company as from 1st August 1863 by Great Western (West Midland Railway) Amalgamation Act of 13th July 1863.
