Incorporated as "Company of Proprietors of Shropshire Navigation" under and Act of 11th June 1788 (28 Geo III, cap.73).

By virtue of Section 4 of London and North Western Railway Act 27th July 1857, Navigation was transferred to and vested in Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company. Section 10 of said Act then provides that from and after passing of act and thenceforth during continuance of Lease from Shropshire Union Company of their Canals and Railways to London and North Western Railway Company, Shropshire Canal by this Act vested in Shropshire Union Company shall by this Act be vested in London and North Western Railway Company as part of canals by that Lease demised to London and North Western Railway Company. Purchase money paid by London and North Western Railway Company was £62,500.
