Committee was appointed and held its first meeting on 20th August 1888 for consideration of project of independent Canal for placing Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, and South Yorkshire Coalfields and Don Valley in more direct communication with sea. Minute Book is headed "Sheffield Canal" and records proceedings of this committee.
Company known as "Sheffield and South Yorkshire Canal Company Limited" was eventually formed and granted a Certificate of Incorporation under companies' Acts 1862-1886 bearing date 15th November 1888.
Company was eventually formed into Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Company and incorporated as such under act of 26th August 1889 to purchase Dearne and Dove Canal, Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, River Dun Navigation and Stainforth and Keadby Canal from Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company. Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Company was vested in British Transport Commission by the Transport Act 1947.
