Canals and river transport

By virtue of Severn Navigation Act 13th May 1842, certain named individuals were appointed Commissioners and their successors were to be elected in accordance with provisions of Section 2 and Schedule A of act. Five or more Commissioners were to be a quorum. Contracts were to be signed by any three Commissioners and mortgages were to be under hands and seals of five Commissioners.

Under Severn Navigation Act 1869, certain provisions of earlier Acts were respectively repealed and amended and Commissioners were incorporated as "Severn Commissioners", body corporate with perpetual succession and common seal, where by previous Acts Commissioners were authorised or required to sign any documents "Seal of Severn Commissioners shall henceforward in lieu of signing be affixed to such documents", and notwithstanding incorporation of Severn Commissioners under this Act everything done or suffered by or with reference to Commissioners under previous Acts was to be as valid as if Severn Commissioners were not incorporated by this Act.

Severn Commissioners passed into British Transport Commission under Transport Act, 1947. Certificate of dissolution dated 25th July 1956 was issued by Board of Trade and published in London Gazette 31st 1956 from which latter date dissolution takes effect.
