First Act obtained 21st April 1769 (9 Geo III, cap.70), and following several more Acts a Consolidating Act was passed, dated 14th May 1829; Company is chartered as "Company of Proprietors of Oxford Canal Navigation".

Name was changed, 28th March 1935, to "Oxford Canal Company". Company passed into British Transport Commission by virtue of Part 2 of Schedule 3 of Transport Act, 1947.
