Incorporated as "Company of Proprietors of Montgomeryshire Canal" under Act of 28th March 1794 (34 Geo III, cap.39). Canal was called or known as "Eastern Branch of Montgomeryshire Canal" and Company was termed in later legislation "Company of Proprietors of Eastern Branch of Montgomeryshire Canal" though also referred to as "Company of Proprietors of Montgomeryshire Canal".
By virtue of Act of 22nd June 1815 another Company was incorporated as "Company of Proprietors of Western Branch of Montgomershire Canal".
By virtue of Section 25 of Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Newton to Crewe with Branches Act 3rd August 1846, Eastern and Western Branches of Montgomeryshire Canal were to be stopped up, and disused as Canals and Company of Proprietors of Montgomeryshire Canal were to sell and transfer to and vest in Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company the Eastern Branch of said Canal and by virtue of Section 26 of same act, Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company were authorised to purchase from Company of Proprietors of Western Branch of Montgomeryshire Canal said Western Branch of Canal. By virtue of this Act both these companies became vested in Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company in 1846.
