Incorporated by Act of 19th May 1770 (10 Geo III, cap.114) by which undertakes became a body corporate by name, "Company of Proprietors of Canal Navigation from Leeds to Liverpool". An Act had been passed, dated 7th April 1720, by which William Squire and Thomas Steeres were nominated and appointed undertakers to make River Douglas alias Asland, navigable, and by act of 1770, Leeds and Liverpool Canal Company were authorised to make canal from Leeds and Liverpool Canal to Douglas Navigation. By act of 24th June 1753 Douglas Navigation became incorporated with Leeds and Liverpool Canal Company.

Leeds and Liverpool Canal Company passed to British Transport Commission by Virtue of Transport Act 1947.
