"The Dock Company at Kingston upon Hull" was formed under act of 14 Geo III, cap.56, of 20.5.1774. Though possessing a Common Seal much of its business was performed by Commissioners from time to time appointed by the Dock Company.

By North Eastern Railway (Hull Docks) Act 1893, the Dock Company was dissolved and amalgamated with North Eastern Railway Company. The Dock Company was, under Section 6 of the Act, notwithstanding such dissolution to continue in existence only for certain purposes therein specified.

John Smeaton was appointed Engineer 7th September 1779 by Resolution of the company of that date.
