Description

Prisoner name: Mary Williams Thomas and Joanne Thomas.

Prisoner age: Mary Williams Thomas aged 14. Joanna Thomas, her mother, aged 34.

Court and date of trial: Devon Lent Assizes 1829 held at Exeter.

Crime: Mary Thomas larceny. Joanna Thomas felony - receiving stolen goods.

Initial sentence: Mary: seven years transportation. Joanna 14 years transportation.

Annotated: Ordered to the Penitentiary April 1829.

Petitioner(s): Mr Justice Gaselee. Two petitions signed by 20 people on behalf of Joanna Thomas. Joanna Thomas. Samuel Saunders of Devonport [Devon], acquaintance of Joanna.

Grounds for clemency: Mary is a fit person for the penitentiary; Joanna has received a good character; Joanna admits receiving but did not know goods were stolen by her daughter; Joanna has infant children and her husband is a mariner; honest sober and industrious character of Joanna; her daughter was led astray and deceived her own mother; Saunders would reemploy her in his house but the daughter needs to be punished.
