Prisoner name: William Summers.
Prisoner age: 42.
Prisoner occupation: Clerk in a banking firm.
Court and date of trial: Surrey Summer Assizes held at Croydon 1827.
Crime: Embezzlement of notes - value £7160 from Mellersh Kidd and Co, Godalming, Surrey, in 1825.
Initial sentence: 14 years transportation.
Gaoler's report: Character good.
Annotated: In Van Diemen's Land; nil.
Petitioner(s): The convict. Thomas Mellersh, banker, of Godalming, Surrey.
Grounds for clemency: Convict was forced to confess as he was assured he would be forgiven; convicted on evidence of Thomas Mellersh alone; compelled to sign possessions over to him under duress; he has a wife and four infant children; convict is a cripple; denies he did it; convict has behaved well in the colony; there are mitigating circumstances.
Other papers: A letter from Mr Twiss transferring an application and petition. A note from Mr Peel stating that the governor of the colony is better placed to make a judgment in the case. A covering letter from William Summers. A note from William Denison forwarding the petition to Mr Phillipps.
