Description

Prisoner name: Henry Shoults.

Prisoner age: 39.

Prisoner occupation: Dealer in coals.

Court and date of trial: Southwark Sessions [Surrey] 7 April 1829.

Crime: Stealing a watch from Solomon Atyers (or Solomon Attias), hawker, of Whitechapel [Middlesex].

Initial sentence: Seven years' transportation.

Gaoler's report: Not known here. Married with four children. Ordered to the hulks.

Annotated: Nil.

Petitioner(s): The convict and 108 people of Southwark. Six people of St Saviour's, Southwark.

Grounds for clemency: Convict was never before convicted of a crime; irreproachable character; prosecutor refuses to sign petition unless he paid £5; supported himself and large family; wife distressed.

Other papers: A letter from Solomon Atyers, prosecutor, stating that his signature is only valid on a petition if it has an assignment in Hebrew. A letter from Ann Shoults, the convict's wife, stating that her husband's health has deteriorated badly due to the 'laborious work he has to perform' and she asks for mitigation.
