Description

Prisoner name: Thomas Shade.

Prisoner age: 32.

Prisoner occupation: Shoemaker.

Court and date of trial: [Not stated].

Crime: Non payment of fine of £20 imposed for absenting himself from the training of the Northumberland militia.

Initial sentence: Committed to the House of Correction at Alnwick [Northumberland] for six months.

Annotated: I think this is a case for immediate discharge. Remission prepared 4 May 1829.

Petitioner(s): The convict, with eight character references for Ann Shade, the convict's mother.

Grounds for clemency: Joined the militia in 1822 but went to London to seek work as it was not active at that time; served in the Artillery for over five years and was discharged, his mother having paid the discharge fee; gave himself up to the Northumberland militia but was given a fine; prisoner is greatly distressed.

Other papers: A letter from Henry Thomas Liddell supporting the petition.
