Description

Prisoner name: Elias Sansom of Sherborne, Dorset.

Court and date of trial: Dorset Summer Assizes 9 August 1821.

Crime: Highway robbery, stealing half a crown.

Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Character good.

Annotated: 'To wait till recommended'.

Petitioner(s): Major Cadell and Captain Robert Nicholls. Four officers of the 28th and 83rd Regiments.

Grounds for clemency: Previous good character; suffering degradation on the hulks.

Other papers: Letter from Alexander Lamb stating that Sansom offered him a bribe of one guinea so his name was not put forward.

Additional Information: On board the hulk York.
