Description

Prisoner name: John Powers or John Power.

Prisoner age: 26.

Court and date of trial: Leicester Lent Assizes 1829.

Crime: Cattle stealing - two stirks property of Joshua Puffer of Sapcote, Leicestershire, prosecutor.

Initial sentence: [Death] commuted to transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: 'Character etc not good, married two children'. 'Conduct good on board the Coromandel'.

Annotated: Nil (May 1829). 'Hernia' (September 1830).

Petitioner(s): 16 inhabitants of Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire. John Powers, the convict's father. John and Ann Powers, the convict's parents, with 27 character references. Joseph Puffer, prosecutor and father-in-law. 35 people including the rector and churchwardens of Stoney Stanton and its vicinity.

Grounds for clemency: The judge expected he would be transported for life; first offence; distressed wife and two small children; afflicted parents who are sober and industrious and have raised a large family; Simeon Constable took some money off Powers and did not give it back; parents vouch for his previous good character; no felonious intent when he took the cattle and sold them.

Other papers: Sarah Linwood sending a direct appeal to Robert Peel. E Miller asking for Powers not to be sent out of the country. Mr Legh Keck transferring petition. A letter from J Dyke, Rector recommending the petition. Mr Halford MP recommending the petition;

Additional Information: Held on board the hulks York and Coromandel. Sent to Bermuda.
