Description

Prisoner name: John Peters.

Prisoner age: 18.

Court and date of trial: Bristol Gaol Delivery [Gloucestershire] 5 April 1829.

Crime: Highway robbery of Anthony Burgess of £4 10s.

Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated: Nil 9 May 1829.

Petitioner(s): William Peters, the convict's father and 13 people including prosecutor. Anthony Burgess, prosecutor. William Peters, father and 15 people of Bedminster [Gloucestershire] with character reference for William Peters.

Grounds for clemency: The convict's father has brought up his children 'in a correct and proper manner'; the convict protests his innocence; Henry Bishop who gave evidence against Peters has twice been indicted; the convict's father lost a leg in 1805 and has been a pensioner since; the high reward offered for the discovery of the offender affected his being convicted.

Other papers: Certificate that William Peters is a Pensioner to the Chest at Greenwich, signed by John Bourshier, Joshua Ellison and G Spearing. Letter from Bush and Prideaux forwarding petition with annotation by Mr R Hart Davis supporting it.

Additional Information: Convict sent to New South Wales.
