Prisoner name: Matthew Harrison.
Court and date of trial: York Lent Assizes [Yorkshire] 1828.
Crime: Horse stealing.
Initial sentence: Death.
Annotated: Both letters answered 14 April; Date of execution 26 April 1828.
Petitioner(s): The Reverend William Hildyard, Chaplain of the East Riding House of Correction at Beverley. Mr Joseph Coltman, Magistrate of East Riding House of Correction and neighbour.
Grounds for clemency: Harrison is not connected with any organised gangs of horse stealers; he is a weak good-tempered man, easily led; has been sentenced before but only for minor misdemeanours; he has behaved well on the hulks; the horse he stole was sold for only 7s.
Other papers: A letter from Mr Baron John Hullock who feels he cannot support Hildyard's opinion but urges Harrison's friends to 'forward a statement of the circumstances'. A letter from Sir John Hullock stating that the Reverend Joseph Coltman should appeal to Mr Peel for mitigation of the sentence. Note from Mr Peel stating he feels he cannot interfere.
Additional Information: In York Castle.
