Description

Prisoner name: William Hall.

Prisoner age: 24.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey Sessions February 1828.

Crime: Larceny of property J James, Holywell Street, Strand, a piece of Kerseymere value 3/- on 22 February 1828.

Initial sentence: Seven years' transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Not known'.

Annotated: To be pardoned [on condition] of employment being found. Term nearly expired. Free pardon prepared 2 July 1832.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner and 25 people of Abingdon, [Berkshire]. W Dodson, Vicar of Abingdon. Sir Henry Willoughby.

Grounds for clemency: First offence; previous good character; respectable family; aged father; wife about to give birth; prosecutor supports petition; got into bad company; prosecuted on first day in London; did not knock the constable down.

Other papers: Two testimonials from J James, prosecutor and H Beck and Co. 13 character references for John Hall, the convict's father, and William Hall. Sir Henry Willoughby requesting result of petition.

Additional Information: In Newgate gaol. Held on the hulk Discovery.
