Description

Prisoner name: Robert Greenslade.

Prisoner occupation: Chemist and druggist.

Court and date of trial: Devon Lent Assizes 1828.

Crime: House breaking - stealing some sovereigns and coins from his grandmother Betty Glanville of Buckleigh, Devon.

Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated: Nil 7 May 1828.

Petitioner(s): Robert Greenslade of Exeter [Devon], a builder and the convict's father, and 22 people including Betty Glanville.

Grounds for clemency: The convict was a faithful and honest tradesman; his wife and two infant children are destitute; he was out of work; has been in prison seven months.

Additional information: The convict worked [as an apprentice] with James Henry Chandler, Assistant Surgeon in the Royal Navy, then of East Stonehouse, Devon, surgeon and apothecary.
