Crime: Sheep stealing - four sheep from William Weightman of Averham, Cheshire.
Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life.
Annotated: Nil 17 April 1828; sailed for New South Wales on the Manlius.
Petitioner(s): Elizabeth Gibbs, the convict's wife, of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, with 56 others. The prisoner, of Costessey, Norfolk.
Grounds for clemency: The convict is the only support of his wife and five children under 14; no previous offence; prosecutor expressing doubts in case.
Other papers: Letter from William Gibbs to his wife [Frances Gibbs] with instructions to apply for parish relief and go to lodgings, signed by seven people. Note from William Weightman agreeing to sign petition.
