Description

Prisoner name: Stephen Gerrard.

Court and date of trial: Chester Lent Assizes [Cheshire] 1828.

Crime: Highway Robbery on Joseph Bancroft of Shipbrooke, Cheshire.

Initial sentence: Death.

Annotated: Reprieved by the Judge.

Petitioner(s): Six people of Northwich, Cheshire.

Grounds for clemency: Prisoner has a clear alibi; prisoner was drunk on the night in question; it was very dark; prisoner should not be convicted if there is strong doubt about his guilt; wife and family and parents in distress.

Other papers: Letter from S J Roberts of Chester.
