Description

Prisoner name: James Gatland or James Gatelin.

Prisoner age: 40.

Court and date of trial: Kent Lent Assizes held at Maidstone 1828.

Crime: Stealing wood faggots from Mr Buttley value not more than 8d.

Initial sentence: Two months imprisonment and hard labour and once privately whipped.

Annotated: Nil 10 April 1828.

Petitioner(s): Mr Urquhart, clergyman of the parish of Westerham, Kent.

Grounds for clemency: Feels he was not properly convicted; is a hardworking man with a wife and family; shows great contrition; he has already been in prison five weeks before the trial.

Other papers: Mr D'Oyly (Judge in the case) transferring letter to Mr Philipps from Mr Urquhart in favour of James Gatland.
