Description

Prisoner name: John Edwards and Solomon Edwards.

Prisoner age: John 13, Solomon 11 (or John 11, Solomon 13).

Court and date of trial: Stafford Quarter Sessions [Staffordshire] 4 April 1826.

Crime: Stealing an iron chain (value 5/-).

Initial sentence: Seven years' transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Incorrigible thieves - behaved ill in Gaol - another brother transported'. John Edwards: 'an Incorrigible Thief. Behaviuor on board the Hulks Bad'.

Annotated: Nil 2 May 1828.

Petitioner(s): John Edwards, the convicts' father, of Wolverhampton [Staffordshire], with nine others. Two petitions from John Edwards and Jane Edwards, the convicts' parents. John Edwards and Jane Edwards, the convicts' parents with 11 others.

Grounds for clemency: They have served two years on hulk; their youthful ages; masters would employ them if released; received excellent character from captain of the hulk; parents have walked to see them; Solomon has died; Benjamin Jukes, tailor would employ John Edwards.

Other papers: A note from S Owen on the Euryalus confirming that John Edwards and Jane Edwards, parents of the boys visited the ship and he gave 'a favourable account of their sons'. Note from Jane Edwards that Mr Capper promised to review the case. A note from Sir Herbert Taylor enclosing the applications.
