Description

Recommendation for the mitigation of sentence for selected prisoners on board the Dolphin hulk.

Convict details: Frederick Ashford, aged 20, convicted at Worcester [Worcestershire] on 14 January 1822 of stealing a pistol.

Convict details: William Bark, aged 22, convicted at Newark [Nottinghamshire] on 18 January 1822 of stealing wearing apparel.

Convict details: Joshua Dudman, aged 26, convicted at Nottingham [Nottinghamshire] on 14 October 1822 of stealing a watch.

Convict details: Samuel Taylor, aged 28, convicted at Stafford [Staffordshire] on 13 March 1823 of stealing shoes.

Convict details: Edward Pemble, aged 21, convicted at Canterbury [Kent] on 10 April 1823 of larceny.

Convict details: William Pemble, aged 24, convicted at Canterbury on 10 April 1823 of larceny.

Convict details: William Rainer, aged 20 convicted at Canterbury on 11 April 1823 of stealing a tablecloth.

Convict details: Francis Russell, aged 2, convicted at Middlesex on 9 April 1823 of stealing from the person; sentenced to seven years' transportation.

Convict details: Samuel Playle, aged 17, convicted at Chelmsford [Essex] on 10 March 1823 of stealing a copper kettle and sentenced to seven years' transportation.

Convict details: Jonathan Waddington, aged 24, convicted at Folkingham [Lincolnshire] on 7 April 1823 of stealing corn and sentenced to seven years' transportation.

All sentenced to seven years' transportation.

Convict details: Edward Dowden, aged 28, convicted at Middlesex on 13 September 1820 of uttering forged notes and sentenced to 14 years' transportation. [Name crossed through].

Recommendation submitted by: G W Lloyd, Captain, George Harker, Chaplain. Recommended by J H Capper, Superintendent.

Grounds for clemency: The first seven prisoners have served more than half of their sentence and shown quiet, orderly and good conduct on board; recommended by the Commander and principal officers of the Dolphin. The last four convicts are recommended for their good conduct on the Bellerophon, Retribution and Dolphin hulks.

Annotated: Free pardon prepared February 1827. Downden rejected by Capper.
