Description

Prisoner name: Jabez Moore or Jabus Moore.

Prisoner age: 22.

Prisoner occupation: Servant.

Court and date of trial: Essex Winter Assizes 11 December 1826 held at Chelmsford.

Crime: Horse stealing - property of David Chalkley.

Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated: nil.

Petitioner(s): Mary Ann Moore, mother of Tottenham, Middlesex, and 12 people including prosecutor. Mary Ann Moore and David Chalkley, prosecutor.

Grounds for clemency: Got into bad company; first offence; worked for respectable masters; mother brought him up with great industry; her only son; horse was restored to its owner; did not have any character witnesses in Essex as his home was at Tottenham.
