Description

Prisoner name: Peter Maxwell alias Peter Saunders.

Prisoner age: 23.

Prisoner occupation: A lunatic.

Court and date of trial: Gloucester Epiphany Sessions [Gloucestershire] 30 January 1827.

Crime: Felony - stealing a donkey.

Initial sentence: Remanded until His Majesty's pleasure be known.

Annotated: This man was brought before the Court of Quarter Sessions April 1827 and fined 1/- and then handed over to his friends. Mrs Maxwell offers no security - two respectable persons ought to enter into a recognizance.

Petitioner(s): M Austin of Gloucester.

Grounds for clemency: Court was unaware of his lunacy when he was arraigned; his mother is prepared to employ a man to look after him; is quiet and harmless; no sentence was passed on him.

Other papers: Extract from Clerk of the Peace's Calendar Epiphany Sessions 1827. Letter from Joseph Cripps, Chairman of the Quarter Sessions, Cirencester [Gloucestershire], concerning case of Peter Maxwell. Deposition of Elizabeth Maxwell of Chelsea, Middlesex, the convict's mother, stating Maxwell's medical history, how she came to lose him and vowing never to let him escape again. 'Missing poster' 5 October 1826. Letter from M Austin stating that Maxwell is harmless and 'strolled away' from a private mad house in Old Brompton. Note from Mr Pitt asking for information. Henry Wood and Henry Peach are willing to enter into a recognizance of £50 if Elizabeth promises to keep him safely. Letter from Joseph Cripps applying for Maxwell's removal from Gloucester Gaol.
