Description

Prisoner name: William Lewis.

Prisoner occupation: Yeoman.

Court and date of trial: Hereford Lent Assizes [Herefordshire] held on 26 March 1821.

Crime: Stealing timber worth under 5s - the property of Thomas Millichap.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Annotated: Considered by Lord Sidmouth 21 June 1821.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner (of Grindon Bishop, Herefordshire) and 44 people of Hereford.

Grounds for clemency: He purchased the said wood chips from a sawyer who absconded with the load; no previous crime; suffers from scrophula and has lost the use of his arm so could not do manual labour abroad.
