Description

Prisoner name: Charles Wellings.

Prisoner occupation: Licensed hawker.

Court and date of trial: Norwich [Norfolk] 15 May 1821.

Crime: Grand larceny - stealing a large sum of money out of a dwelling house.

Initial sentence: Transportation [term not specified].

Annotated: Considered by Lord Sidmouth 30 July 1821, nil.

Petitioner(s): Prisoner and 10 people of Sutton [Kent].

Grounds for clemency: Not a native of Norwich; honest and reputable; no previous crime; did not know fellow convicts; joined in a game of cards with no criminal intent.

Other papers: Letter from Charles Wellings forwarding the petition. A letter from Robert Alderson, Steward of Norwich stating the other three are known criminals. A note from L P Cockerell asking for the petition to be attended to.

Additional Information: Convicted with Flegg, Chalker and Samuel Onions; Wellings in the City Gaol Norwich. The convict is from Sutton, Kent.
