First Act obtained 11th April 1791 (31 Geo III, cap.89) forming "Company of Proprietors of Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal Navigations".
Undertaking of canal company was vested in Great Western Railway Company in 1870 by virture of Great Western Railway (Hereford and Gloucester Canal Vesting) Act 1870, for Rent Charge of £5000 per annum payable half-yearly.
Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal Company was not dissolved thereby, Rent Charge being payable to Canal Company and distributed by it among its share and stock holders. 1870 Act provided that "Canal Company shall only exist for purpose of receiving and distributing Canal Rent Charge".
Canal Company passed into British Transport Commission by virture of Transport Act 1947.
