Incorporated under act of 21st May 1813 as "United Company of Proprietors of Ellesmere and Chester Canals" by uniting of Chester and Ellesmere Canals. Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal Navigation was also united with this company by act of 8th May 1845. By act of 3rd August 1846, company was incorporated as "Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company"; Act was to be cited as "Shropshire Union Railways and Canal, Chester and Wolverhampton Line Act 1846".
