Incorporated by act of 24th May 1726 (12 Geo I, cap.38), under which Masters, Wardens, Searchers, Assistants and Commonalty of Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire in County of York were appointed Undertakers of Navigation.

By act of 24th April 1727, Mayor Aldermen and Burgesses of Borough of Doncaster were appointed Undertakers of part of Navigation from Holmstile, Doncaster to Wilsick House, Barnby Dun, but by Act dated 21st March 1732, these two Navigation companies were united into one Company by name "Company of Proprietors of Navigation of River Dun".

Under terms of South Yorkshire Doncaster and Goole Railway Act 22nd July 1847, a Company was incorporated by name "South Yorkshire, Doncaster and Goole Railway Company" in which it was provided that after proof to satisfaction of Commissioners of Railways that one half of Capital had been actually paid up and expended, River Dun Navigation and Dearne and Dove Navigation should belong to and become vested in said South Yorkshire Doncaster and Goole Railway Company.

By Minute of Committee of Proprietors of Navigation of River Dun dated 24th April 1850, it is recited that Certificate of Commissioners of Railways to above effect had been issued (Copy of said Certificate dated 19th April 1850 appearing after Minute) and that amalgamation of companies had taken place.

Name of South Yorkshire Doncaster and Goole Railway Company was changed to "South Yorkshire Railway and River Dun Company" under South Yorkshire Railway and River Dun Act of 1850.

This company was leased for 999 years to Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company by South Yorkshire Railway and River Dun Company's Transfer Act 23rd June 1864. Under South Yorkshire Railway and River Dun Company's Vesting Act of 16th July 1874, South Yorkshire Railway and River Dun Company was dissolved and vested in Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company.
