Originally incorporated under act of 14th May 1811 as "Company of Proprietors of Bristol and Taunton Canal Navigation", but by act of 17th June 1824 (cap.114), as route of canal was altered, company abandoned this name and were incorporated as "Company of Proprietors of Bridgewater and Taunton Canal Navigation". By act of 9 and 10 Vic, cap.114 (1846), name was again changed to "Bridgewater and Taunton Canal and Stolford Railway and Harbour Company". This company was transferred to Bristol and Exeter Railway Company under Act 29 and 30 Vic, cap.96 (1866). Bristol and Exeter Railway Company became part of Great Western Railway Company as from 1st January 1876 by Great Western and Bristol and Exeter Railways Amalgamation Act 27th June 1876.
