First Act obtained 24th February 1768 forming "Company of Proprietor of Birmingham Canal Navigation". By Act dated 24th June 1783 a new company was incorporated by name "Company of Proprietors of Birmingham and Fazeley Canal Navigation". Under Act dated 1784 these two companies were incorporated by name "Company of Proprietors of Birmingham and Birmingham and Fazeley Canal Navigations". By virtue of act dated 17th April 1794, company was incorporated under name "Company of Proprietors of Birmingham Canal Navigations".
Act of 17th June 1835 dissolved last mentioned Company and re-established it a body corporate by name "Company of Proprietors of Birmingham Canal Navigations".
By London and Birmingham and Birmingham Canal Arrangement Act 1846, London and Birmingham Railway (subsequently London and North Western Railway, then London Midland and Scottish Railway) Company guaranteed to make up dividend each year on Birmingham Canal Navigation shares to £4 per share. These shares were subsequently converted into stock on which guaranteed dividend was 4%. Canal Company was not under any obligation to refund sums paid under this guarantee. £100 shares were consolidated into £100 consolidated stock - see assembly minute 26.8.1870.
Company passed to British Transport Commission on 1st January 1948 by virtue of Transport Act 1947.
