Incorporated under act of 11th June 1792 (32 Geo III, cap.84) by name "Company of Proprietors of Canal Navigation from Manchester to or near Ashton-under-Lyne and Oldham".

The Company was leased in perpetuity to Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway Company by act of 22nd July 1848, and under Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (Additional Powers) Act of 2nd August 1883, section 48, company was dissolved and vested in Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway Company whose name was changed in 1897 to Great Central Railway Company.

Great Central Railway Company became part of London & North Eastern Railway Company from 1st January 1923.
